Key Features of the Green Ration Card
The Green Ration Card in Telangana comes with several key features that make it distinctive:
Eligibility for BPL Families: Unlike the general ration card which can be issued to all categories of households (priority and non-priority), the Green Ration Card is strictly for BPL households. These are families who live below the poverty line as defined by the government, often struggling to meet basic food needs.
Subsidized Food Grains: Green Ration Card holders are entitled to receive food grains at highly subsidized rates. This includes:
- Rice at Rs. 1 per kg (for poor families under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana).
- Wheat at Rs. 2 per kg (or equivalent subsidy as per availability).
- Other essential food items like sugar and kerosene are also distributed at subsidized rates depending on availability.
Nutritional Benefits: While the Green Ration Card mainly focuses on basic food grains, some families may also be eligible for other nutritional supplements as part of Telangana’s broader food security initiatives.
State-Specific Benefits: In addition to the central government’s provisions, the Telangana government provides supplementary benefits through state-funded welfare programs such as the Rice at Re. 1 Scheme for all BPL families.
Aadhaar-Linking: One of the core features of the Green Ration Card in Telangana is the integration with the Aadhaar system. This helps in authenticating the identities of the beneficiaries and eliminates duplicate or fraudulent claims. Every Green Ration Card holder is required to link their card with their Aadhaar number to streamline the process.
Digital Monitoring and Transparency: The Telangana government has integrated e-POS (Electronic Point of Sale) machines at the Fair Price Shops (FPS) to facilitate biometric authentication (via fingerprint or iris scan) during the distribution of food grains. This system ensures that food grains reach the right beneficiaries and reduces leakages in the distribution system.
